Alger County

Alger County is located Northern Central Upper Peninsula of Michigan and is neighbor to Marquette, Schoolcraft, Luce and Delta Counties. Alger County has a population of 9,522 as of 2013 and spans over 915 sq. miles. The City of Munising is the largest city in Alger County consisting of 2,327 people as of 2013. Some other areas in Alger county include; Autrain, Chatham, Christmas, Deerton, Grand Marais, Rumely, Shingleton, Trenary and Wetmore.

There are a number of places to visit in Alger County and activities to enjoy. For anyone who can appreciate natural beauty, Pictured Rocks National Park is a spectacular place to hike or kayak. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has 40 miles of lakefront on Lake Superior and 100 miles of trails throughout the park which stretches between Munising and Grand Marais.  The 15 miles of sandstone cliffs also provide one of a kind views that enhance any visit. Alger County also offers around 300 miles of groomed trails for snowmobile enthusiasts. Another National Forest that claims part of Alger County is the Hiawatha National Forest which includes Grand Island. This Island is in Lake Superior just off from Munising. Grand Island offers great sights to see, hiking and rustic camping. This area also provides amazing opportunities to view shipwrecks in Lake Superior. Due to the temperature of Lake Superior shipwrecks are kept in good conditions for viewing and a great place to check this out is with the Alger Underwater Preserve. There are miles of amazing Lake Superior Shoreline and trails, streams and rivers, and hundreds of inland lakes to explore!


Alger County is a great area to enjoy all of the Upper Peninsula’s changing seasons. In the summer, attend the annual 2-day Pictured Rocks Days where free boat tours, kayak demos, free music, food, vendors and kid’s activities can be enjoyed. On the Fourth of July, you can enjoy a Fireworks on the Bay Cruise as well as all day events, including parade, music, food, and games! For the runners, there is the Pictured Rocks Road Race, featuring a half marathon and a 10k run/walk that gets you moving right along the Lake, as well as the Grand Island Marathon, which is a 50k, a full marathon and a 1/2 marathon with breathtaking scenery around Grand Island. Late summer brings the Alger County Fair in Chatham, as well as the Grand Marais Music & Arts Festival, a weekend of music, crafts, great food, and fun, and the Munising Bay Classic Car Show. There is no shortage of outdoor adventure here! Enjoy hiking, biking, paddling, ORV/ATV riding, boating, and more. This area is also made for camping with developed sites, backcountry camping, RV and rustic areas, as well as many cabins/shelters available for rent! Winter is a season to be celebrated in Alger County and they claim the one and only outhouse races held in annually in February. This past year they hosted their 25th year and had many participants. This very popular race consists of teams constructing their own unique outhouse to time race down a pre-packed track that goes through downtown Trenary. Another great winter activity in this area is ice climbing, and the Michigan Ice Fest in Munising is a great event for both novice and expert climbers. There are several schools located in Alger County for children K-12, as well as Head Start and an Early Childhood Development Center.
