Alger County

Alger County

Alger County is located in the north central Upper Peninsula, and neighbors Marquette, Schoolcraft, Luce and Delta Counties. It has a population of 8,757 as of 2023, and spans just over 915 square miles. Munising is the largest city in Alger County; some other areas in Alger County include Autrain, Chatham, Christmas, Deerton, Grand Marais, Rumely, Shingleton, Trenary and Wetmore.

Alger County has a number of interesting places to visit. Perhaps the most notable is Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, which stretches from Munising to Grand Marais. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has 40 miles of shoreline on Lake Superior, as well as 15 miles of sandstone cliffs that provide one of a kind, incredible views. Also in Munising lies Grand Island, which offers beautiful scenery, hiking and rustic camping. This area also provides amazing opportunities to view the many shipwrecks in Lake Superior, which have been extremely well-preserved due to the lake's cold temperatures. A great place to check this out and learn more is with the Alger Underwater Preserve. Also near Munising lies the Hiawatha National Forest, which claims a part of Alger County, and features over 300 miles of well-groomed snowmobile trails, as well as trails for hiking and biking!

The Fourth of July in Alger County is a huge event, as well. Visitors can enjoy a Fireworks on the Bay Cruise, as well as all day events, including parade, music, food, and games. This area also hosts the Pictured Rocks Road Race, which offers a half marathon or a 10k run/walk that gets you moving right along the Lake. There is also the Grand Island Marathon, which offers a full marathon and half-marathon with incredible scenery around Grand Island. Late summer in Alger County brings the Alger County Fair in Chatham, as well as the Grand Marais Music & Arts Festival, which is a weekend of music, crafts, great food, and fun, and the Munising Bay Classic Car Show. There is certainly no shortage of outdoor adventure here! The Munising Bay area provides excellent hiking, biking, paddling, ORV/ATV riding and boating opportunities. This area is an extremely popular camping spot, with developed sites, backcountry camping, RV and rustic areas, as well as many cabins/shelters available for rent, both seasonally and year-round. Winter is certainly a season to be celebrated in Alger County;  they claim the one and only outhouse races, which are held annually in February. This very popular race consists of teams constructing their own unique outhouses and racing down a pre-packed track that goes through downtown Trenary (which happens to be the birthplace of Trenary Toast). This long-standing event has become extremely popular in recent years. Along with all of this, of course, ice fishing, snowmobiling and skiing the area’s trails are an absolute must once the snow hits!
