Menominee County

Menominee County is located in the south-central part of the Upper Peninsula and neighbors Marquette, Dickinson and Delta Counties, as well as Wisconsin. Menominee County is in the southernmost part of the Upper Peninsula, and has a population of 22,945 as of 2023 and spans over 1,300 square miles.

Menominee County was established in 1863, and has a rich history deeply tied to the Menominee Native American tribe, from whom it derives its name. The area was initially explored by French fur traders in the 17th century, with the first permanent European settlements appearing in the mid-19th century. The discovery of rich timber and mineral resources spurred rapid development, leading to a booming lumber industry by the late 1800s. Menominee County's economic growth was further fueled by the arrival of the railroad, facilitating the transport of goods and attracting immigrants from Europe. Over the decades, the county has transitioned from a resource extraction economy to a more diverse economic base while preserving its cultural heritage and natural beauty.

The county boasts a diverse landscape with forests, multiple inland lakes and rivers, as well as nearly 43 miles of shoreline on Lake Michigan. Notable natural areas include the Cedar River State Harbor and Menominee River State Recreation Area, which offer scenic views and multiple different outdoor recreation opportunities. The county’s more notable waterways include the Menominee River, which forms a natural boundary between Michigan & Wisconsin and has some fantastic real estate on its shores, as well as the Green Bay, which provides ample opportunities for fishing, boating, and wildlife observation. Menominee County’s forests are also extremely popular amongst hunters from all over.
