Gogebic County is located in the south central part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and is neighbor to Iron and Ontonagon Counties, this county also boarders Wisconsin. Gogebic County has a population of 15,916 as of 2013 and spans over 1,476 sq. miles. The City of Ironwood is the largest city in Gogebic County consisting of 5,183 people as of 2013. Some other areas in Gogebic County include; Bessemer, Wakefield, Watersmeet, Marenisco, Ramsay, etc. It should also be mentioned that this county is one of four in the Upper Peninsula that is in the Central Time Zone, as this will cause some time confusion.
Gogebic County has plenty to do and in the winter you have three downhill ski areas to choose from. Big Powerhorn Mountain and Blackjack Mountain are both in Bessemer, then there is Indianhead Mountain in Wakefield. In the summer take time to explore the many water hot spots including; Lake Superior or one of the 100 waterfalls in this area. Then there is also the largest inland lake in the U.P. to spend those hot summer days, Lake Gogebic is 13,000 acres. Another popular area in Gogebic County is the Cisco Chain of Lakes/ Sylvania Wilderness where there are 302 lakes and 241 miles of trout streams. The Sylvania Wilderness area is 21,000 acres where you can camp and reconnect with nature.
Ottawa National Forest is located in Gogebic County. This area contains almost 1 million acres and touches part of Southern Lake Superior shore. Throughout the park there are a number of inland lakes, rivers and waterfalls. Check out their website to see when the camping is open for the season.
