Marquette County is the largest county in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and is neighbors with Alger, Baraga, Iron, Menominee, Dickinson and Delta Counties. It is home of the Northern Michigan University Wildcats and has a population of around 67,700. Marquette County is located in the central UP along Lake Superior. It covers 1,827 square miles across the U.P. and 83 miles of that is on the Lake Superior shoreline. Marquette County is not only the largest county, but it also contains the largest city in the U.P. as well. The City of Marquette has a population of 21,491 as of 2013. Other areas in Marquette County include; Negaunee, Ishpeming, Republic, Champion, Gwinn, Little Lake, Skandia and Big Bay.
There is unlimited beauty to explore in Marquette County including its 77 waterfalls and around 100 inland lakes. The western part of Marquette county is part of the Huron Mountains which it shares with Baraga county. The Huron Mountains is a beautiful small mountain chain that over looks Lake Superior and is a great area to explore either by foot or ATV. Marquette county also has 500 miles of groomed trails to explore along with two alpine ski areas. This area also offers numerous trails to cross country ski and hike throughout wooded areas or along Lake Superior. Exploring the numerous hiking trails throughout Marquette County is favorite pass time for locals and visitors alike. Some of the more popular tails include Sugarloaf Mountain, the North Country Trail that goes by Little Prequ Isle, Iron Ore Heritage Trail and Hogsback.
Marquette county is the location of the largest wooden dome in the world, the Superior Dome. The Superior Dome is where Northern Michigan University’s football team plays along with many other events including the Builders Show, TV 6 Craft Show, Kaleidoscope, Pump up the Dome, etc. This dome was built in 1991, covers over 5 acres and is 14 stories high. The city of Ishpeming is the location for the Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame which also happens to be the birth place of organized skiing. Marquette county has been made famous by the book/movie Anatomy of a Murder by James Voelker. This was based off from an actual trial that took place in Marquette where Mr. Voelker was the defense attorney. The movie was filmed throughout Marquette County including places as Marquette, Big Bay, Ishpeming and Michigamme.
